Circa Procedures: some Qs and As
Who decides what gets published in Circa?
The editor. If you are interested in writing for Circa, please contact the editor, indicating what areas you would like to write about - either in terms of themes or, for reivews, in terms of geographical location. Or simply submit the text, if it is an article; we do not accept unsolicited reviews for publication in the magazine, though we may do so for online.
News items - called the Update section - are collated by the editor.
Does Circa pay for published work?
Yes, though our rates are not that impressive.
I want to have a show/event/book reviewed in Circa - what do I do?
Bring it to the attention of the editor.
Circa's policy is that we select the reviewers for shows ourselves, and the text of reviews is not available prior to publication.
Circa endeavours to be fair in its reviewing policy, but shortage of space within our pages measured against the huge number of events means it is far from perfect. Availability of reviewers can also be a problem. If you are interested in writing reviews, get in touch with the editor, if possible sending copies of your work.
I want to have my forthcoming show listed in Circa...
Circa does not publish listings, except online (see here). Send information about your art event to us here.
The structure of Circa
Founded in 1981, Circa Art Magazine Limited is a not-for-profit company incorporated in Northern Ireland.
The magazine's longer-term goals and procedures are the responsibility of the Circa Board, whose membership changes regularly. Board membership is by invitation.
Day-to-day running of the magazine is the responsibility of the editor and the administrator, both based in the Dublin office.
Circa is financed through three main sources: the Arts Councils, north and south, plus Culture Ireland; sales and subscriptions; and advertising.

Vision for Circa
- Key terms: contemporary art and visual culture; quality; relevance; criticality.
- Content of Circa
- The magazine must be relevant; it must be the first source for information / views / debates / undertanding in relation to contemporary art in Ireland.
- It should be the ‘journal of record’ for contemporary art in Ireland.
- The magazine should track popular visual culture as well.
- It should have a critical stance towards contemporary art and visual culture, in the sense of seeking to understand its context, origins and meanings.
- The magazine should be seen from abroad as both (1) and (2).
- Its reputation should be based on the quality of the product: high-quality writing, presentation and ideas.
- The magazine should be fair and open.
- It should be willing to take new initiatives, eg in terms of projects, collaborations, etc.
- Into the future, the magazine should be:
- bigger – more pages, more reviews, etc.
- better at tracking new talent, new ideas, anything that is emerging and important
